National Wildlife Reserve of Orlu
The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) ensures its management and develops programs for the study and monitoring of wildlife. The OFB works in partnership with a local structure, the Mountain Observatory, to carry out study, monitoring and promotion programmes.THE 3 MAIN MISSIONS OF THE RESERVE ARE:- Study and monitor the evolution of wildlife and its habitats: OFB agents regularly monitor biodiversity, particularly sensitive species. Endemic to the Pyrenees, the izard and the capercaillie hold a special place there. The in-depth studies of which they are the subject contribute to a better understanding of these two species and their management.- Sustainably preserve the fauna and flora: The environmental awareness and policing actions carried out by OFB agents for the benefit of the natural heritage are based on the results of field studies.By respecting the instructions on the boundary markers of this territory and its discovery trail, you will discover a remarkable biodiversity while contributing to its conservation.- Raising awareness of adults and children: The Mountain Observatory has created several tools for discovery and awareness of the natural heritage of the Orlu National Reserve:The Maison de la Réserve and the museum space, located in the Forges d'Orlu, will reopen their doors in 2023. Indeed, as part of the industrial tourism project called "Vallées Ingénieuses", these spaces are currently being redeveloped. It is a question of proposing a new hydroelectric and biodiversity interpretation space. Due to its shared management recognized as exemplary, the Orlu Reserve was included in the Green List of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) in 2019. Enjoy a preserved natural Eden...Admire the chamois that roam the steep slopes of the Orlu National Reserve, listen to the marmots whistle...Look up, in the sky hover the great griffon vultures and the kestrels.A one-hour walk will take you to the heart of the reserve among the marmots, while three hours will take you to the En Beys refuge. More committed routes will allow experienced mountaineers to reach crests and summits. See section "to see, to do, walks and hikes" Regulations in the reserve:- No dogs, even on a leash so as not to disturb wildlife and domestic herds,- Stay on the trails so as not to disturb wildlife and allow everyone to observe- For rest or picnic, 2 zones allow visitors to temporarily deviate from the path- Avoid making too much noise so as not to disturb wildlife- Do not litter- Fire prohibited- Do not pick flowers

The castle of Miglos
The ruins of Miglos castle in the Vicdessos Valley between Niaux and Capoulet, stand on a calcareous pinnacle. The current remains show the mark of the 14th century, but a stronghold had been there in the 12th century. In the middle of the 13th century, the Lord of this place, Arnaud de Miglos, was a partisan of the Cathars’ cause and had given weapons to those besieged at Montségur. In the late Middle Ages, the land of Miglos, established as a barony, controlled the access to the Foix' states. In 1789, the castle of Miglos (already in ruins) is destroyed by fire.In 1987, it was classified as an historic monument. Some work has already been able to restore the Donjon (in 2000) and the north-west tower (in 2003 and in winter of 2007).Visits of the surroundings are free but the building zone is prohibited. There is a picnic area, parking and marked trails. A panoramic table has been installed at the foot of the castle (in 1999)with its expansive view over the Vicdessos Valley and from Niaux's cave.

Ax-les-Thermes

Niaux
The international reputation of Niaux and its caves is considerable even more than the village. The large cave of Niaux retains drawings from the end of the Magdalenian period (13 or 14,000 years ago) and traces of paths, but many other caves have yielded many other remains around Niaux. With a Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Vincent the Spaniard, a very fashionable saint in the Upper Ariège in the Middle Ages, the village of Niaux was framed in the 13th century by 3 fortified caves, castles-barracks of the Counts of Foix: that of Niaux , that under Calamas on the left bank and that of Alliat. These caves were used to monitor the road to the bottom of the valley, they are now almost destroyed. Currently, the village itself now has 154 inhabitants. whose cave is located on the heights of Niaux upstream of the castle of Miglos. In addition, in the mountains, at an altitude of more than 1300 m directly above the village, another fortification has been spotted, named Castel Merle, in the open air, but which is not dated and could have existed in the High Middle Age. It was only at the end of the Middle Ages that Niaux was endowed with a castle-manor and a small fortification of which few remains today in the village, near the Alliat bridge. Downstream, in the gorges, at the foot of the road, there was a very large Catalan-style iron forge from the 17th to the 19th century.

Ornolac-Ussat-Les-Bains
Near Tarascon-sur-Ariège, and close to the Vicdessos valley, is the Pyrenean thermal village of Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains which has an average population of 315. Very close to Ornolac and Niaux, lies the cave of Lombrives, one of the largest in Europe. If the thermal baths of Ussat-les-Bains are essential against spasmodic and psychosomatic diseases, the village owes its notoriety to the picturesque monuments and its neighboring caves including those of Fontanet and those of the Churches. The caves of Ornolac, such as that of Lombrives, contain a number of clues and vestiges, particularly from two distinct eras: the Bronze Age (votive deposits in the porches) and the Middle Ages (fortified habitats). The Fontanet cave retains traces of occupations, passages and much older drawings, some of which date from the end of the Magdalenian period.Another cave in Ornolac is famous for having sheltered Cathars on the run for a while in the middle of the 13th century. It was a fortified cave of the Counts of Foix for monitoring the road to the Ariège valley. Ornolac-d'en-haut is the first of the existing villages to have been built in the Middle Ages. It retains its beautiful Romanesque church. But at the same time, was born another village, now abandoned and named Lujat. All that remains are the ruins of a pre-Romanesque church which can be reached after a good walk. It was only recently that the two villages of Ussat-les-bains were added: they were born with the thermal baths, which gave the full name by the merger of the two villages. The first drilling dates from the Napoleonic era. The thermal baths and the Ornolac and Ussat sector were important sites of the Resistance during the Second World War. The site is also an excellent starting point for hiking, especially towards the Col d'Ussat, bordered by paths that lead there.
